What is the Minimum age to get a Tattoo in Florida

In Florida, the minimum age for getting a tattoo is 18. Minors (16-17) may only get tattoos if a parent or guardian is present and provides written consent. Submission of proof of completion of this bloodborne pathogen and communicable diseases training course requirement and passing of the examination is only required for initial licensure or registration. There is no continuing education requirement for renewal of an artist license or re-registration of a guest artist.

Bloodborne Pathogen Course

Take an approved Bloodborne Pathogen Course from the Department of Public Health. You should have achieved a minimum score of at least 70% on the course examination. Access the list of approved courses on the Florida Department of Public Health website. – Click Here

Fill out the Tattoo Artist License Application

A

Complete License Application

Print and fill out the license application form. Make sure to include the name of the licensed tattoo shop where you work as your primary facility.

Bloodborne Pathogen Course

Provide proof of attending a bloodborne pathogen course by attaching a copy of your certificate to your application. Make sure that you have achieved a minimum score of at least 70% on the course examination.

Photo ID +
1 Photo

Attach a copy of your photo ID to your application as proof of 18 years of age or above. Also, attach a current passport-size photo.

Pay the fees applicable

The Registration fee is $60. You can pay fees via check, money order, or credit card while at the Dept of Health.

Submit your Application form

Bring your completed application to your local county health department office. Your application will be processed within 90 days.

Keeping Your Artist Permit Up-to-Date: Understanding Validity and Renewal

Artist permits are valid from the date of issuance and expire automatically at the end of the facility license year unless revoked earlier by the Department. Annual Renewal Fee is also $60. If your license expires, you will also have to pay a $25 Reactivation fee. You cannot professionally tattoo without an active license from your local Florida Department of Health. You can pay any fees via check, money order, or credit card while at the Department of Health.

Steps to Become a Tattoo Artist

1. Talk to Your Advisor

Learn more about our tattoo apprenticeships and what it takes to be a successful tattoo artist by speaking with an Advisor. The program can be tailored specifically for your schedule, no matter where you live.


2. Start From Home

As a tattoo apprentice, you’ll start online in a live virtual classroom, where you will work one-on-one with your trainer from the comfort of your own home. Once you pass your virtual classroom requirements, you’re ready to complete your apprenticeship in one of our studios. Apprenticeships generally take 1 year to complete.


3. Tattoo at Our Studios

Upon completion of your apprenticeship, we welcome you to tattoo at one of our exceptional tattoo studios. You will have all the skills necessary to provide quality custom tattoos with world-class customer service to your clients.
