Lies You Were Told About The Tattoo Business That Prevented You From Following Your True Calling
If you are an artist of some kind and have a few tattoos of your own that you absolutely love, you might have thought, ‘Hey, I should become a tattoo artist in the tattoo industry in New York!’ Many tattoo artists were formerly art students. It’s very common to get your start in other mediums before moving to a human canvas. You probably knew you wanted to be an artist since you were a young child. You just probably didn’t realize the best way to make a living from your art is by tattooing.
On the other hand, you could be stuck in a job you absolutely hate, working in a field that has nothing to do with art, feeling sorry about yourself because you don’t have enough time or money to spend with your family. But why aren’t you making a living from your art? We’re pretty sure the answer to that question is, someone might have scared you into believing that becoming an artist isn’t a real job and that you would never make enough money to have a good life.
TRUTH About Location! New York Is Always A Good Idea
Lucky you! You find yourself in the Big Apple! The concrete jungle where dreams come true! Whether you are a native New Yorker, a recent transplant, or just living here for a short period of time, there’s literally nowhere better to be for someone wanting to work in the Arts. Just take a look around! For goodness sake, the streets of NYC are a runway show! Literally, everything in NYC is Art. Fashion, street art, museums, and architecture to name a few!
TRUTH About Your Tattoo Journey
So before you decide to change careers and follow your dreams of becoming a professional tattoo artist, there are a few things we need to clear up. Because we want you to have the best tattoo journey, we’ve compiled a list of the Top 5 Myths about the tattoo industry, and we’re BUSTING them for you!
1 – “You Can Teach Yourself or Learn Online.” BUSTED. That is False!
Many people think you don’t need any formal training to be a tattoo artist but think about it this way…Does a doctor go to medical school? Does a lawyer go to law school? Of course, they do! So why would you want to go to a tattoo artist who didn’t attend a tattoo school? While there’s nothing that states you need a specific education to become a tattoo artist, you definitely DO NEED to be trained in sanitation, sterilization, blood-borne pathogens, and how to avoid damaging the skin while you work. And while those aspects will be on your state licensing exam, remember that just because you’re good at drawing doesn’t mean you’ll be good at tattooing. It certainly helps to have a natural aptitude for drawing, but it takes much practice and guidance to learn what you can draw versus what you can tattoo.
At Ink Different Tattoo School, it’s critical for us to produce world-class tattoo artists, which is why we’ve developed a curriculum that contains everything you need to know from start to finish about becoming a tattoo artist. We should also mention that our apprenticeship goes beyond the tattooing aspect of your new career. You’ll gain business and marketing skills that will help you expand your clientele and business.
2 – “Being A Tattoo Artist Is A Side Hustle, Not A Career.” BUSTED. That is False.
Any professional tattoo artist will tell you that is entirely and absolutely: FALSE! Becoming a tattoo artist has many perks. One of those perks is that you are your own boss and create your own schedule. If you have a day job, feel free to open up your book to clients at night. However, many tattoo artists are gainfully employed as full-time tattoo artists. With our apprenticeship, we teach you the skills you need to gauge the price of a tattoo. Do you charge by half an hour, or do certain pieces have specific prices? Many tattoo artists sell themselves and their art short, perhaps not making enough income to be full-time Tattoo Artists.
3 – Tattoo Shops Are For The Biker Boys” Busted. That Is False.
We can say that “back in the day,” the above statement was more than likely true. Since 2011, when Ink Different Tattoos opened its doors, we have ended that silly stereotype. Ensuring people of all identities felt welcome in our shops was essential. We always want all of our clients to feel safe, comfortable, and respected in our shops. The process of getting a tattoo should be inclusive, no matter what. Our top priority is ensuring our tattoo studios are safe spaces for clients who walk through the door from any walk of life.
