Why Choose Tattooing as a Second Career?

Let’s be honest: most people don’t wake up one day and think, “You know what would be fun? Drawing on people permanently.” But for those with a creative streak and a passion for meaningful tattoo work, to change careers and become a tattoo artist in Austin offers something that many other jobs don’t: the chance to turn art into a lifelong tattoo career. The ability to connect with tattoo clients and create permanent pieces of tattoo art adds a level of personal fulfillment rarely found in traditional office jobs.

Tattooing combines artistry, personal connection, and entrepreneurship. Plus, according to ZipRecruiter, tattoo artists in Austin earn an average of $105,894 annually. This makes tattooing not just a fulfilling career but also a financially viable one. If you’ve ever dreamed of making a living through your tattoo, tattooing might be your thing.

What Skills Do You Need to Switch Careers?

First things first: you’ll need artistic skills. You’re already ahead if you’ve been sketching, painting, or working in any other creative field. But don’t worry if your art experience is limited to doodles during boring meetings. Austin is bursting with learning opportunities, from art classes to online tutorials. Organizations like The Contemporary Austin offer workshops to help budding tattoo artists hone their craft.

You’ll also need to be willing to start from scratch. To change careers and become a tattoo artist in Austin means embracing the beginner mindset. There’s much to take in from learning tattoo techniques to understanding health regulations. However, Austin’s supportive tattoo art community and resources make it easier to find your footing. Platforms like Big Medium connect tattoo artists with mentorship and learning opportunities.

Did you know our tattoo school, Ink Different, has locations in several exciting cities across the United States? We do! We have locations in Brooklyn, Los Angeles, Orange County, Chicago, Tampa, Miami, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Atlanta and Connecticut.

Do You Need a License to Tattoo in Austin?

You’ll need a license to work as a tattoo artist in Austin. Texas law requires you to complete a bloodborne pathogens course, work in a licensed tattoo studio, and follow strict health and safety guidelines. These regulations aren’t just red tape; they ensure that tattoo clients and tattoo artists stay safe. You can find more about licensing requirements on the Texas Department of State Health Services website.

Licensing might sound intimidating, but it’s a manageable step. Completing the necessary courses and adhering to health standards protects your tattoo clients and enhances your credibility as a professional tattoo artist. Clients will appreciate knowing you take their safety seriously, which can help build trust and loyalty in your tattoo career.
