I was born in what was once USSR and now is Russia. When I was 21 I finished my college degree, packed my suitcase, and came to the United States. I was always artistic so I started earning money by making bikinis from scratch and selling them online. I loved it but the business got to the point where it became bigger than I could handle. With no business experience or knowledge of the clothing business, it got a bit scary and overwhelming. During that time I started to draw again and that is how a future as a professional tattoo artist appeared on the horizon.
I started Body Art & Soul’s tattoo apprenticeship in 2012. My fiancé saw my drawings and told me that I’d be good at it. He kept bringing it up over a year. We were looking around for apprenticeships, visiting different studios but was always hearing from artists that it’s either not worth it or it’s not for women. Over the summer, the idea of becoming a tattoo artist became more and more an interest to me and in September I found B.A.S. I booked my workshop online and was so excited I called my fiance instantly. I had no idea what I was getting myself into since my English wasn’t that great and I had no clue what to expect. I was really nervous that they would not let me join the apprenticeship after being rejected so many times by other artists. I even brought my portfolio with me in case I had to convince them. However, it wasn’t a problem and two weeks later I started my apprenticeship. It was my birthday gift for myself. I had full support from both of my families. In fact, my 60-year-old mother-in-law has received four tattoos from me since.
I spent all of my free time at the studio working on my drawings, flash, pads, and machines. All I was thinking about was my apprenticeship and how great my life is going to be when I became a tattoo artist. It took me exactly 1 year and I was offered a job on the staff. The first month was crazy busy and I could not believe it. My dream came true and within a year I was offered a full-time position.
I have been with Body Art and Soul for five years now and since then I’ve had the chance to manage our first location in Jersey City. That was an honor. Also during that time, I’ve had the chance to build a new studio across the street from the location we already had in Jersey City. I was traveling between Brooklyn, Jersey City, and Philadelphia, inspiring apprentices learning at B.A.S. It’s been amazing to see how much B.A.S. has grown since then. Now I am the Lead Artist in the Jersey City studio that I helped build and open which is so amazing. I was mentoring artists that came to the program after me and have built an awesome team. I went into this apprenticeship to become a tattoo artist and came out with so much more than I ever imagined. B.A.S. provided me with the opportunity to build my career as an artist, run and manage my own studio, and so much more.
It is truly amazing that I was able to make a great living and build my name in this country. I have so many friends who have become my clients and so many loyal clients who have become my friends. I don’t just have a dream job, I have a great career. Life is awesome and all of this is real because of an amazing company that believed in me and gave me these opportunities. The B.A.S. team gave me a huge opportunity, a little help with drawing skills, and the strong will to be successful. ♥️
