Do you want to change careers and become a Tattoo Artist? Whether you are looking for a tattoo school near you, a tattoo apprenticeship, or how to become a tattoo artist near you, you first need to think about what “near me” means. No offense, yet the reality is that some cities will be better than others. Some will have larger populations, more significant art scenes, and more people who love tattoos.
Given that Ink Different Tattoo School is nationwide, we can help you answer the questions of which cities are the best cities to live in as a tattoo artist and which are the best cities to find tattoo schools and tattoo apprenticeships.
New York City is dripping in art with famous museums such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), The Guggenheim, and The Whitney Museum of American Art. Don’t forget the amazing art galleries in Chelsea that are full of paintings, sculptures, and different types of art installations from local artists.
NYC is also home to architectural art pieces with buildings like The Chrysler Building, The Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, and the newest building, the Vessel, which is home to the Shops at Hudson Yards. Of course, New York has historical art, such as Lady Liberty, Ellis Island, and the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. Don’t forget to grab a “dirty water dog” for a quick bite, which is located on just about every other corner!
Now with all that said, Brooklyn has been blowing up for years! While Williamsburg Brooklyn might as well be another neighborhood in Manhattan, and Greenpoint is more when you feel like “adulting”, you can still kick some artistic severe butt in Bushwick and East Williamsburg.
Bushwick Open Studios is an absolute must if you want to dive into all the cutting-edge art New York offers, watching murals go up in the background. At the same time, you lose yourself in whatever immersive street art experience is happening right before you.

When it comes to changing careers and becoming a Tattoo Artist in Los Angeles, Downtown Los Angeles, or DTLA as it’s called, is really where it’s at for local Los Angelenos and visitors alike. Its ultra-cool vibe is home to much culture and history, with spots like the Broad Museum, Disney Hall, the Institute for Contemporary Art, Geffen Contemporary Art Center, and many other art venues.
Downtown Los Angeles has an entire neighborhood dedicated to art called… Are you ready for it?… LA’s art district! It’s amazing. Get lost by checking out the open-air restaurants and galleries.
East Hollywood, Silverlake, and Echo Park are where you’ll find the feeling of Brooklyn in Los Angeles that you might be looking for when moving to LA. For great coffee and uniquely DTLA vibes, check out Sunset Junction, just down the street from our shop.
Another must-see is the historic Santa Monica pier, which dates back to 1909 and starts off or ends up in Venice Beach.
As we pointed out in other articles, Boston, Massachusetts is the largest metropolitan area in the New England region, where you’ll find the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Museum of Fine Arts, yet New Haven is famous for its competing pizza parlors! So random, right?
The entire feud is featured in the documentary Pizza, A Love Story, which you totally should watch! Our shop is right down the street from Modern Apizza, so we kind of lean towards them as the winners.
While there are definitely iconic lighthouses all over New England, we prefer checking out the Boston Hardcore scene, the massive Jam Band scene, or whatever random live music is happening right down the street from our shop at Toad’s Place in New Haven, CT.

If you are bloody rich, spend some time touring the most impressive higher institutions of learning like Harvard, Yale, and Dartmouth, with their brick and ivy-covered campuses, but of course, get your tattoos at Ink Different if you’re stopping by to gawk at Yale.
A little secret for you… East Rock in New Haven is where you can experience a great scene, a reasonable cost of living, bars, restaurants, and coffee shops, and avoid drunken 19-year-olds. It is locally referred to as “Grad Alley” because this is where graduate students and professors tend to live. If you are looking for an apartment, try there!
An article in the New York Times recently titled “More than just Academics and Mozzarella” highlights New Haven’s growth into more than just a college town. We love it, and we think you will too!
Suppose you want to change careers and become a Tattoo Artist in the mid-Atlantic region. In that case, Philadelphia is full of history and beauty with well-known sites like Avenue of the Arts, Love Park, the infamous Rocky Statue, and the historic Liberty Bell.
Another historic site to enjoy is Elfreth’s Alley, the oldest residential street in America! Don’t forget to visit historic locations like Ben Franklin’s grave, Ben Franklin’s Bridge, and The Betsy Ross House.
Philly is also full of architectural art with well-known areas like Philadelphia Magic Garden and the entrance to Philly’s Chinatown; a colorful 40-foot structure known as the Friendship Gate.
Make sure to feast on a world-famous Philly cheesesteak of course.
A hidden gem you won’t know about unless you’re from Philly, is the Tower Theatre, right down the street from Ink Different Tattoo School. This music venue first opened in 1972 and in 2018 was voted by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the 10 Best Music Venues in America.
When it comes to changing careers and becoming a Tattoo Artist in the south, Florida is full of unique places. From theme parks, like the world-famous Disney World, to sunken gardens and famous beaches, to the nightlife and mural-covered walls of Wynwood, Florida has a lot going for it.
Tampa, Florida, where we decided to open our first Florida location, has been referred to as a young Los Angeles. Its expansive size, growth rate, and reasonable cost of living are pulling people in from all over.
When you first go to Ybor, you’ll be clear that Tampa’s art life and nightlife rival the best. When it comes to the greater Tampa Bay Area and how the locals feel about art, there is even a Dali Museum! Yep! Who would have known, right? That’s why we’re here to help.

And don’t worry, with us. Your grandma won’t have to refinance her home to pay for your training. You’re not going into tattooing because you’re a Rockefeller, so you shouldn’t have to pay like one.
