Do You Need to Go to Art School to Be a Tattoo Artist in Miami?

This is a question many aspiring Tattoo Artists have, and the answer might surprise you. While having an artistic background certainly helps—especially when drawing jaw-dropping designs that your future clients will love—art school isn't a must. In fact, most Tattoo Artists learn their craft through a tattoo apprenticeship. It's where you'll develop the hands-on skills art school can't always provide.

During an apprenticeship, you'll learn how to tattoo safely, master the technique, and understand the business side of tattooing. Miami's tattoo scene is as rich and diverse as the city itself, meaning you'll have the chance to learn from some of the best artists in the game, including the experienced professionals at Ink Different Tattoo School. If you're lucky enough to enroll in Miami, you could be mentored by our very own Gabe Jaksich, one of the industry's most respected artists.

How Do I Get a Tattoo Artist License in Miami?

If you're serious about becoming a licensed tattoo artist in Miami, here's the step-by-step guide to make it happen:

  1. Complete Your Application: Start by filling out the Tattoo Artist License Application. Don't forget to include the studio name where you plan to work.
  2. Get Trained: You must take a state-approved Bloodborne Pathogen and Communicable Diseases training course. Make sure to ace the exam with at least a 70% score.
  3. Submit Your Info: Once you've completed the course, send your application, the $60 state fee, your training certificate, and a copy of your ID to your local Department of Health. Also, check with them about any local fees to avoid surprises!

For more details, you can check out the Florida Department of Health's Tattoo Artist requirements.

How Long Does It Take to Get My License?

Once you've submitted your materials, the Florida Department of Health has up to 30 days to process your application. But don't worry—it usually happens much quicker. If you're in a hurry, call your local office for information on the latest processing times.
