When it comes to finding true love, it helps if you find someone who shares your passions and interests. For some people, these can be movies, long walks on the beach, or traveling. For Paloma Yglesias and Pete Doty, their passion was tattooing and that’s why they are a match made in ink!
With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we want to introduce you to a tale of love and art that spans oceans and transcends modern barriers. It can seem so hard to find someone who shares your values these days, but the story of Paloma and Pete proves that love can blossom in the most unexpected places.
For most people, coming to a Body Art & Soul (B.A.S.) tattoo apprenticeship is all about learning how to express themselves in an exciting and dynamic medium. That’s what brought Paloma and Pete to the organization, and it’s what set them on the path to find each other.
“I set out from my home in Puerto Rico right after college to get a footing in the working world as a 20-year-old. NYC was the most logical choice with my art background. I had a deep desire to be involved with tattooing since my early teens, yet tattooing was not the sole reason I came to NYC.” Switching from the tropical landscape of Puerto Rico to the urban jungle of New York must have been quite the culture shock, but Paloma handled it in stride.
She decided shortly after moving that she wanted to pursue art full-time, and she managed to find the B.A.S. program to become a tattoo artist.
Pete’s background was a bit different than Paloma’s journey, but he was another soul in search of meaning and value to add to his life. As Paloma recounts, “Pete had been working various jobs to support himself as an artist for nearly 10 years. Tired and fed up with the multitude of disempowering issues that come with working for different companies and governments, he realized it was time to pursue his art full time.”
Fate, it seems, brought them to the same apprenticeship program. They were both intrigued by the core values and the culture that are present in Body, Art & Soul, and it helped foster their first meeting and their subsequent relationship.
“Pete and I met on March 14, 2012. I only remember this cause I got a tattoo by Guy on the same day Pete introduced himself to me. Peter and I were newly working artists in the studio. At that time I would have never thought that I was going to be in a position where I was going to work with my soulmate.”
It just goes to show that love can find you no matter what your situation is or how you got there. However, as they got to know each other, it became evident that they shared more than just a passion for artistry and tattooing as a potential career. It was their experiences from the world around them and their belief in a better alternative that helped spark their budding romance.
“It’s our belief that the main reason for our crumbling society is people’s lack of caring for each other while trying to put all the emphasis on themselves. We get that tattooing, as well as many other professions, is all about competition and who can be perceived as the best…No one’s circumstances are the same, yet we all share one same desire- to be great. To us, that is the ultimate project anyone could want to share.”
Both Paloma and Pete reject the notion that everyone is supposed to compete against each other to get ahead. We are all part of society, and we should take the time to both recognize that and break down the systems that keep people separated. For them tattooing and artistry are not just about showcasing their skills – it’s about developing a connection with people and creating something bigger than themselves.
Their story is not exactly rare when you consider the culture and landscape that you find in the B.A.S. apprenticeship. People from all walks of life come together to share their passion for the craft and hone their skills. One of the core concepts of this program is learning how tattooing can impact the world around you, and why it’s so much greater than just a way to earn money. The people who come to Body Art & Soul Tattooing are there because they love what they do and want to share their gifts with the world.
“The less you give, the more you take. It won’t be long before everyone starts noticing what human beings are really up to, it’s already occurring. Secrets and lies can no longer exist, now it’s only personal responsibility and allowing oneself to be held accountable. This is the only way that anyone will be able to thrive in the future. With tattooing, we have pioneered a space for people who want to be in alignment with this way of existing.”
