Hello, Tattoo lovers! It’s July, a very special month for us all at Ink Different Tattoos because it marks the 13th anniversary. We celebrate the 13 Years of Ink Different Tattoos embarking on an adventure through uncharted waters to do things differently. On July 4th weekend, 13 years ago, we announced to the world our vision of creating a nationwide community of inspired tattoo studios, staffed with Good Human Tattoo Artists who cared about creating safe and welcoming spaces not only for clients but for tattoo apprentices as well.
Our apprenticeship mission is to: Ensure Excellence and Equal Opportunity in the Tattoo Industry. We believe that every artist from every walk of life deserves an opportunity to make a living from their art.

The Journey of Ink Different Tattoos
Ink Different Tattoos was created out of trying to solve a problem all too familiar in the tattoo industry at that time. “My cousin was an amazing artist who wanted to become a tattoo artist. She found a tattoo apprenticeship at a local studio, where all she learned was how to deflect sexual harassment, clean up rat droppings, and help the owner cheat on his wife,” shares Paul-Anthony Surdi of Ink Different, recalling one of the reasons he set out 13 years ago to create something different. “At that time, everywhere you looked, and everyone you asked, had emotionally, psychologically, and sometimes physically abusive experiences in their apprenticeship. I’m sure that wasn’t 100% of people’s experiences around the world. Yet that was all I ever found, so we started to create something different.”

The Creation of Ink Different
After two years of experimentation in Jersey City, NJ, what would eventually become Ink Different Tattoos as we know it today, started in a little 600 sq ft space at 283 Graham Ave in Brooklyn, New York. There is where the history begins: a fully functional tattoo studio that tattooed happy clients. While also offering a comprehensive Tattoo Apprenticeship program for aspiring tattoo artists. It sounds easy, it was anything other than a walk in the park.
Expansion to Nationwide
After the success of the first Ink Different Tattoo Studio and Apprenticeship Program in Brooklyn, the business has consistently expanded. Today, Ink Different is making a difference from coast to coast.
Some of the locations are part of the “Extended Family of Shops”, or Affiliates. A program that helps tattoo shop owners address the two biggest challenges they face; revenue and turnover, while ensuring Ink Different’s mission can be fulfilled everywhere.
